Tender Co Type 486 Burro Shirt | Brown

The 486 Burro shirt by Tender takes inspiration from the word ‘burrito’ which is a machinist’s term for this rolled up inside-out shirt - it’s a complicated sewing operation. This shirt is cut without side seams and the right and left panels are joined at the back with a double thickness vertical panel functioning as an oversized, rotated, traditional yoke. It’s no joke.

As for the wool stripe cotton tattersall fabric, it’s weird and wonderful, like all Tender cloths. This one is an original interpretation of a classic tattersall: the ground is an ecru all-cotton herringbone, with alternating weft stripes of blue, green and yellow coarsely spun, which turn different shades of brown during the dyeing process. When the fabric is rotated 90 degrees in cross cutting, the subtle herringbone becomes horizontal and the bolder wool stripes run vertically. Tattersall cloths derive from Tattersall’s horse auction of 1766 in Newmarket, England and were originally used for horse blankets but later became popular for waistcoats and shirts. 

This shirt has smaller buttons than usual which add interest. The fabric is cut sideways and sewn in the USA with 100% cotton thread, dyed to the colour ‘Brown Hat’. It’s a seasonal hadal dye from Tender that came about from thinking about the colour choice back to front - rather than choosing a Pantone colour and asking the dye house to match it, William described the deep brown hue and this was the result. And hats off to William because the colour is sensational - it goes with everything from black to navy, white and cream.
