Tender Co. Type 439 Stole Pocket Butterfly Shirt | Black Hole Wool Calico
Coming from Tender’s first collection made in the USA, the Stole Pocket Butterfly Shirt does things a little differently.
Long panel pockets run down the front and tuck neatly into the shoulder seam - a nod to the stoles worn by Christian priests and bishops (we’re Irish after all). The pockets can be accessed at the side, doubling as discreet hand warmers. Cut on Tender’s Butterfly block, the shirt has no side seams and features reversed sleeves joined at the shoulder for a clean, fluid shape. Unlike previous butterfly shirts, cuffs open with full tailored plackets behind the wrist, so rolling them up is both practical and satisfying. The buttons are real shell, styled after a classic cat-eye button, and every stitch is made with cotton thread - a small detail that quietly reminds you of the craftsmanship. Contrasting blue stitching on this black shirt has been achieved in the ‘Black Hole’ dyeing process which follows the development of other hadal colours in previous seasons and is the most intense black achievable through direct dyeing.
Wool calico is woven from fine wool worsted yarn on the same plain weave pattern as the standard Tender cotton calico used for jean pocket linings. The twist of the yarn causes a subtle diagonal crosshatch texture to develop as the fabric is dyed, worn and washed. This shirt is also available in clean cotton drill, thunderbolt cotton cambric and doppler stripe cotton cambric.

Tender Co. is the creation of designer William Kroll.
Tender specialises in rare techniques to produce very unique garments often using deadstock fabrics and natural dyes. All products are made in small runs. Tender garments have all been made in England until the brand relocated in 2025, shifting production to USA. Due to the engineering and ‘slow’ ethos behind the construction, each item can differ to the next, for a truly special piece.
