Tender Co. Type 471 Plastron Shirt | Turkey Red Wool Calico
Hailing from the first Tender Co. collection made in USA, this Type 471 Plastron Shirt has been dyed in Turkey Red, a pure madder-root colour, much like the one in Henri Matisse’s The Red Studio of 1911.
As for the name, a plastron is a chest covering found on a fencer’s pad, a breastplate or even a tortoise’s belly. The Plastron Shirt borrows the idea, with wide pleats beneath the armholes forming a soft panel across the chest. The pleats give volume to the skirt of the shirt, which is cut without side seams so the tails hang freely. A single chest pocket and full tailored cuff plackets nod to more traditional shirtmaking. The buttons are real shell, shaped after a classic cat-eye, and the shirt is sewn throughout with cotton thread.
The wool calico cloth (a fine worsted plain weave with a subtle crosshatch that comes out through dyeing, wearing and washing) is made on the same looms and pattern as Tender’s cotton calico used for jean pocket linings. It’s certainly one of the most lightweight shirts we’ve come across, with a longer cut for a touch more character. As light as they come - easygoing in the heat and perfectly at home under a wool vest even when it isn’t.

Tender Co. is the creation of designer William Kroll.
Tender specialises in rare techniques to produce very unique garments often using deadstock fabrics and natural dyes. All products are made in small runs. Tender garments have all been made in England until the brand relocated in 2025, shifting production to USA. Due to the engineering and ‘slow’ ethos behind the construction, each item can differ to the next, for a truly special piece.
