Looking into the Middle Distance

Middle Distance is a clothing brand based out of Glasgow, Scotland that was founded by Robert Newman.

Doing things in any conventional matter is entirely out of the question for Middle Distance. Instead this one-man-brand takes the unconventional route for everything - prioritising unconventional materials, unconventional manufacturing methods and unconventional designs to create something entirely unique, original and just really really cool.

Take the Drill jacket for instance. From the outset it could be considered a grey jacket that’s slightly cropped with a boxy silhouette and dotted with holes. But it’s not just a grey jacket, it’s like art, a collectable and incredibly rare, with only a few made worldwide. The workmanship in undeniable. Rob chose drill fabric, an ultra heavy brushed cotton and applied laser cutting with hundreds of perforations before the garment was assembled in the UK. Once sewn, the jacket was heavily washed at a high temperature, “removing the crisp burned edges of the laser cut holes and lightly felting them over, turning them into small pockmarks with a perforation at the centre”. The Drill jacket was then garment dyed, all of which occurred in the UK, giving him oversight over every.single.thing.

You can’t write this stuff - who would’ve thought up such a concoction? Well it can only be the brainchild of Robert Newman, who has garnered a hefty load of design experience over the years for well respected Italian workwear and American streetwear brands, such as Massimo Osti Studio, Supreme and Stone Island. Newman is also the other half of WORKING, which will also blow your mind when it comes to experimentation, pushing clothing design and dyeing processes to the absolute limit.

Despite all of this process, the jacket, and other Middle Distance garb is seriously wearable. It’s technical and artisanal all in once, which is exactly what you might expect from a brand that has set out to blur the lines between craft and technology, while exploring radical histories of self-made uniform and streetwear.

We are very proud stockists of Middle Distance. There simply is no other brand like it.
